Black Widow Learned a Terrible Lesson About Marvel’s Symbiotes

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Black Widow & Hawkeye #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Black Widow’s new partner has their sights set on Clint Barton. Even worse, they aren’t telling her everything they know about their situation.

Black Widow & Hawkeye #2 finds the eponymous duo catching up on old times and recent developments alike, primarily the latter’s admission of guilt in the murder of a foreign diplomat. While Natasha can tell that Clint is hiding something from her, so can the Widow symbiote she has bonded to. As astonishing as that might be, the fact that the Widow symbiote is also aware of the would-be assassin lying in wait for them is even more so, especially the fact that it doesn’t feel the need to warn its other half about the impending danger.

Avengers: A Classic Marvel Villain Just Put an End to an MCU Villain

Avengers: Twilight gives one MCU supervillain the opportunity to cut down his competition — and it could change the Marvel Universe permanently.

Black Widow and Hawkeye have been one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic duos since the latter’s first appearance all the way back in Stan Lee and Don Heck’s 1964 story “Hawkeye, the Marksman!” (from the pages of Tales of Suspense #57). At the time, Hawkeye was on the run when his first attempt at superheroics was mistaken for a brazen act of crime. When the Black Widow stopped to help him, Hawkeye embarked upon a genuine career in villainy, albeit for only a short time before he turned things around and joined the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Natasha’s other partner, the Widow symbiote, is a far more recent addition to the Marvel Universe. This lone offshoot of the Venom symbiote first appeared in 2023’s Venom #23 by writer Torunn Grønbekk and artists Ken Lashley and Ramon Bachs. Though the Widow symbiote is incredibly young, and Natasha herself has little in the way of experience wielding such beings, the two formed a fast bond and seemingly ingratiated themselves with one another in an instant.

Miles Morales Just Made His Worst Enemy Even Stronger

Miles Morales’ latest fight against his worst enemy inadvertently turns his best power into one of his worst foes’ most devastating weapons.

Writer Stephanie Phillips has previously discussed the way the current Black Widow & Hawkeye draws inspiration from the duo’s early stories, even in light of such modern developments as symbiotes along the way. “One of the coolest parts about this series is its kind of a look back on their relationship as well,” Phillips said. “We’re playing with homages to the Don Heck and Stan Lee Tales of Suspense stories; their first appearances and, dynamic with Iron Man, which I think is always super fun.”
