S.H.I.E.L.D.s Greatest Agent and Punisher Must Share a Warzone

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Get Fury #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Nick Fury is back in action in the pages of Marvel Comics. This time, he just so happens to be sharing a literal war zone with the Punisher.

Get Fury #1 drops readers into the middle of the Vietnam War circa 1971. While Captain Frank Castle spends his day helping the soldiers under his command stand up to some far less capable military police, another classic Marvel icon is experiencing a vastly different aspect of the war. Rather than a quiet patch of desert, Nick Fury is caught alongside the rest of his troops deep within the jungle. Worse still, they have just been traded off with no idea of where they are headed next.

Nick Fury has been a key part of the Marvel Universe since his debut in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s story “Seven Against the Nazis!” from the pages of 1963’s Sgt. Fury #1. After growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, Fury joined the war effort to push back against the Axis Powers. Soon enough, he was leading his own squad, the infamous Howling Commandos, in missions across Europe. Fury’s earliest adventures would frequently find him fighting to dismantle the machinations of villains such as the Red Skull, often alongside heroes such as Captain America and Bucky Barnes.

Though Frank Castle, better known as the Punisher, first appeared as Marvel’s premier gun-toting antihero in 1973’s Amazing Spider-Man #129 by writer Gerry Conway and artist Ross Andru, his past as a soldier has been expanded upon in subsequent stories. As a Marine, Frank served four tours of duty. While Frank’s time in the military includes real-world events, it also saw him take the battlefield for much of the in-universe Siancong War during which he first encountered various future Marvel heroes, such as Ben Grimm, Tony Stark and James Rhodes.

The X-Men’s Original Leader Put a Horrifying Twist on an MCU Moment

The X-Men are stepping into the most harrowing chapter of their entire lives as their original leader rewrites an epic Marvel tragedy.

In March, Garth Ennis touched on Get Fury‘s return to Frank Castle’s time as a Marine, specifically to the same period in which his 2003 miniseries Born takes place. When asked if he had personally read anything that reconceptualized the era for him, Ennis responded, “Certainly, I can see the stuff I got wrong- Born is set in October ’71, several months after US Marine Corps ground operations in Vietnam actually ended.” Ennis added, “Beyond that, reading about the experience of Vietnamese people in the war led me to create the character of Letrong Giap, allowing me to take a look at things from the locals’ perspective.”
