Iron Man’s Endgame Snap Becomes an Epic Fan-Made Comic

If Marvel fans ever wondered how Iron Man‘s Nano Gauntlet snap from Avengers: Endgame (2019) may have looked in a ’70s comic book, they now have their answer.

On Instagram, artist Ian Wilkins, who goes by the social media handle of @spikeytortoisecomics, shared a fan illustration he created that reimagines the iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe moment in a classic Marvel Comics style. According to Wilkins, the illustration is actually another take on a one-page piece he did three years ago, this time adding in panels of Thanos’ reaction to the Infinity Stones being stolen from him, and giving Iron Man a more dynamic look. However, the look of the hero and villain are not made to closely match their MCU counterparts, but how they used to appear in the early years of Marvel Comics.

Thanos’ comic book debut was actually in 1973’s The Invincible Iron Man #55, an issue written by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich with pencils by Mike Esposito. Wilkin’s artwork draws Thanos and Iron Man as they are depicted in the older issue and other early comics, even giving Tony Stark his classic mustache instead of the goatee actor Robert Downey Jr. sported across the MCU’s various installments. For his costume, Tony is seen in his classic red-and-gold Iron Man suit, which Endgame‘s Mark 85 armor resembled by adding more gold to the 85’s arms and legs. The Nano Gauntlet has a small, comic-specific detail added as well, being that the color order of the Infinity Stones does not appear as it does in the MCU, but in Marvel Comics storylines like the 1991 Infinity Gauntlet event.

As of writing, Avengers: Endgame stands as the MCU’s highest-performing movie, raking in global earnings of over $2.79 billion. This figure allowed it to surpass Avatar (2009) in 2019 and become the highest-grossing movie of all time, a title held for over a year until a 2021 Avatar re-release helped the film reclaim the title. History has already repeated itself, being that the sequel to Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), has made over $1.55 billion after just three weeks in theaters, beating out The Avengers (2012) to place as the ninth-highest grossing movie ever. Whether The Way of Water will beat out the MCU’s higher-ranked movies — Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Endgame — remains to be seen.

For readers interested to see more of Wilkins’ work, on his Instagram, he has put his artistic spin on other live-action superhero moments. Some of the artist’s re-creations include Matt Murdock defeating the Kingpin at the end of Daredevil Season 3, J. Jonah Jameson laughing at Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and the MCU’s Peter confronting Green Goblin in No Way Home. According to a pinned post from Dec. 16, Wilkins also takes commissions priced at $75 for a “retro comic style” piece.
