Frank Miller’s Uncle Scrooge Sparks Major Social Media Reaction

[[{“value”:”

Frank Miller has been doing special variant covers for Marvel for the last two years, and the superstar artist, best known for his work on Daredevil, Dark Knight Returns, a Human Torch Marvel Hostess ad, and Sin City (well, okay, three of those four things), has drawn a lot of attention from comic book fans on social media, and much of it has been negative. Now, Miller’s variant cover for Marvle’s upcoming one-shot, Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime, has been released, and it, too, has caused a major stir on social media.

Miller has been doing a new art style in recent years, with his style clearly about breaking things down to their simplest form, to achieve power from simplicity. That approach has not been received that well from many comic book fans, especially those used to Miller’s more familiar older comic book style (or even his Sin City style, which is obviously closer to this current stuff than, say, Daredevil or Dark Knight Returns, but still much more detailed).

How have fans reacted to Miller’s take on Uncle Scrooge?

Earlier this week, Marvel released a number of other variant covers for Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime, including covers by Skottie Young and Pepe Larraz, but social media’s reactions were generally centered on the Frank Miller variant cover.

One fan joked, “Frank Miller’s uncle scrooge will haunt me in my dreams. Thanks marvel.”

Another fan mocked Marvel over it, “Disney Editorial: “What is it? Yeah I’m sure it’s fine. Whatever. I’m busy.””

Someone else noted, “I can never unsee this Frank Miller Scrooge McDuck…I give the guy a lot of leeway but….JUMPIN JESUS ON A POGO STICK!”

On Facebook, fans and other comic book creators have also taken issue with the cover. Although, of course, Miller’s cover has its defenders, as well. On a Facebook post by José Villarrubia about the cover, one commenter argued, “Going by Miller’s recent work over the last decade, I think this may be the best thing he has done in years. I am guessing his age and going too deep into his own style have altered his output more than some of our likes, but unlike his depictions of Wolverine and Wonder Woman in recent years, I see Uncle Scrooge when I see this image.”

How has this compared to fan reaction to Miller’s other variant covers?

At least the response to the cover has not been quite as bad as some of the response social media had to Miller’s variant cover for the Ghost Rider/Wolverine crossover, like “Frank Miller achieving the impossible He made Wolverine look like trash.”

Unlike Scrooge, people had a previous version of Wolverine to compare to, as well, which was a big part of the bigger reaction…

The great comic book artist, Paul Grist, though, had an interesting take on it, “Saying Frank Miller Can’t Draw is a bit like saying Bob Dylan can’t Sing. Yes, technically, you’re probably right. But you’re kind of missing the point. That picture of Wolverine looks like a wild ball of muscle thats going to tear you apart.”
