A new original graphic novel aimed at Young Adult and Middle Grade audiences featuring the Transformers has been announced by Skybound. Transformers: Worst Bot Ever: Meet Ballpoint will be the first book in a new series of graphic novels from writer Brian “Smitty” Smith and artist Marz Jr.
Skybound’s solicit for the novel describes the struggles that Ballpoint the Decepticon will face in the graphic novel. “The Decepticons are known for being bad…but Ballpoint is truly the worst – the biggest failure of them all. After the latest attempt to take down the Autobots goes horribly wrong, he’s kicked out of the Decepticons, for good! Will Ballpoint be able to prove his worth by defeating the Autobots all by himself? Or will he keep failing and find that being the “best” is… More than Meets the Eye?” Transformers: Worst Bot Ever: Meet Ballpoint arrives in comic stores on July 9, 2025, and will be available at booksellers and digital platforms on July 22, 2025.

Ballpoint’s story will be released under the young adult imprint, Skybound Comet. In Skybound’s press release announcing the new graphic novel, the publisher revealed that the story is the first in a new series of original graphic novels and is an “integral component” to its overall partnership with toy company Hasbro. Other collaborations between the two brands have included the Energon Universe comics (including Void Rivals, Transformers and G.I. Joe) as well as Skybound’s ongoing Transformers and G.I. Joe comic books.
Transformers: Worst Bot Ever: Meet Ballpoint writer Brian “Smitty” Smith discussed what it was like having the opportunity to write a brand-new character for the Transformers universe. “It’s been awesome bringing Ballpoint to life,” he said. “Getting to add a brand-new character to the Transformers universe is a once in a lifetime opportunity!”

Jr, the artist for the graphic novel who has also worked on the Energon Universe’s Void Rivals, shared how he has loved Transformers from an early age. “I’ve been obsessed with Transformers since I was a kid,” he said. “The 1986 animated movie blew my mind! I’ve tried to put that magic and love into each page.”
