The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Power #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of DC’s most underrated villains might be the key to saving the universe from Amanda Waller’s army.

While many of the world’s remaining heroes are busy regrouping and planning their next move from within the Fortress of Solitude, Amanda Waller is already well on her way toward taking out every single one of them. As seen in the pages of Absolute Power #2, it is only a matter of time before Waller unleashes yet another of her secret weapons on the likes of Superman. Unfortunately for her, she isn’t the only one with an unexpected ace up her sleeve, and the Time Commander’s magic hourglass could very well be the end of her plot.

Introduced in 1965’s The Brave and the Bold #59 by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon, John Starr was a brilliant scientist whose obsessions quickly led him to a life of crime. After being imprisoned, Starr built a time-travelling device in secret, one that came in the form of an hourglass. With this newfound power, Starr renamed himself the Time Commander and embarked on a career as a superpowered villain.

Like the original Time Commander, the modern-day incarnation of the character was a Gotham-centric villain who came into conflict with Batman on numerous occasions. During their final battle, the Time Commander was ruthlessly interrogated by Robin. In a devastating turn, the Time Commander lost his life before he could provide the Batman family with any of the answers they were looking for, with his death coming at the hands of various members of the ominous organization known as the Court of Owls.
