Spider-Man just saved Tombstone from crossing the one line he would never be able to return from — and there’s no telling what comes next.

Amazing Spider-Man #59 picks up right where the previous issue left off, with Lonnie Lincoln, better known as Tombstone, in the middle of hunting down and murdering his own daughter Janice, aka Beetle. Luckily, Spider-Man is there to keep Tombstone from killing Janice in cold blood, even if it means taking some serious hits in the process. Unfortunately for them both, it isn’t until after Spider-Man is struck by a moving subway train that the fight comes to a close, leaving Tombstone to wonder how he was ever so blinded by his rage in the first place.

First seen in the pages of 1987’s Web of Spider-Man #36 by writer Gerry Conway and artist Alex Saviuk, the man who would become Tombstone lived through a violent and tortured childhood before finding a place for himself in the ranks of New York City’s underworld. At the time of Tombstone’s first appearance, he was already a major player in the NYC organized crime scene. Although Tombstone has faded into relative obscurity at various points, the events of Marvel Comics’ Gang War crossover event helped cement his stranglehold over the city.

Janice Lincoln made her Marvel Comics debut in Ed Brubaker and Butch Guice’s story “No Escape (Part 1)” from the pages of 2010’s Captain America #606. At the time, Janice was working as a bartender, and while she was aware of her father, he was never an ever-present fixture in her life. Eventually, Janice is presented with the Beetle armor she now wields by the Fixer and Baron Zemo, who offer her the opportunity to bring Bucky Barnes to his knees.

Since then, Beetle has played a role in various Marvel storylines. She has also found an unlikely romance with Randy Robertson, son of Tombstone’s former childhood friend and longtime rival, Robbie Robertson. During the events of Gang War, their planned wedding was brought to a violent halt that almost drove an irreparable wedge between the happy couple. This storyline also pitted Janice against her father, leading to Tombstone’s murderous actions against her now.
