Spider-Gwen is Up Against Marvel’s New Sinister Six
[[{“value”:”
Spider-Gwen’s ongoing battle against Marvel’s original Chameleon has put her on a collision course with a different iteration of the Sinister Six.
After facing off against a shapeshifting, villainous version of herself in the pages of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #3, the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 only barely manages to come out on top. While her victory is far from worth celebrating, her situation isn’t nearly as bad as that of her opponent. As it turns out, the Chameleon hasn’t just regained his old powers, he has lost control of them entirely, and Marvel is getting a whole new Sinister Six-in-One because of it.

First seen in Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s “Spider-Man Vs. the Chameleon!” from the pages of 1962’s Amazing Spider-Man #1, Dmitri Smerdyakov was born the half-brother of one of the Wall-Crawler’s other classic villains, Kraven the Hunter. As he grew up, Dmitri’s abusive father drove him to hide his own identity, culminating in the boy developing a keen sense for impersonation. This eventually led Dmitri to take up a life of crime as the Chameleon, during which he initially attempted to frame Spider-Man for stealing sensitive government secrets.
Although Chameleon was never a part of the original Sinister Six formed by Doctor Octopus back in 1964’s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 in Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s opening story “The Sinister Six,” he would go on to join four separate future iterations of the iconic supervillain team. The Chameleon would also see his repertoire of abilities expanded upon when he underwent a series of transformative procedures. Rather than having to simply rely on disguises and makeup to impersonate others, the Chameleon gained the power to truly change his physical form to match those of unwitting subjects.
Spider-Man: Ultimate Universe Introduces its Version of an Iconic Villain
Marvel’s new Ultimate Spider-Man finally introduces the latest version of Otto Octavius — although he hasn’t fully become Doctor Octopus yet.
The Chameleon isn’t the only classic Spider-Man villain that Spider-Gwen has had to go up against recently. After moving from her home reality to that of the primary Marvel Universe, also known as Earth-616, Gwen was soon set upon by Kraven the Hunter. Thanks to the likes of Peter Parker, Cindy Moon, and Miles Morales, Gwen was able to survive the attack and make it home relatively unscathed. Unfortunately for her, this also meant owning up to the fact that she had been relocated by the Time Variance Authority in secret and that things had not been going well by any means.

Spider-Man
Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.
Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
