CBR had the honor of sitting down with iconic comic book creators, Tom King and Daniel Sampere, to discuss Wonder Woman and her daughter Trinity at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
When asked about how they got involved with the new Wonder Woman run, King revealed that he was slightly reluctant at first. “So many people have done Wonder Woman, you know? And so many have messed her up, so it was intimidating,” said the writer. Ultimately, he decided to take on the project, stating, “I was getting too comfortable and decided that it was time to do something mainstream again.”

Sampere said that, once he heard King was working on the project, he was more than excited to jump on. He praised the writer for his storytelling talents, “I’m a huge fan of Tom so it was an easy choice.” King also complimented Sampere’s artistic talent and credited his ability to bring the story to life, “I just gave him the script and the rest was all him.”
The creators also discussed the changes that they made to Wonder Woman and why. Sampere said that he tried not to use as much weaponry in his iteration of the character. He said, “She can knock someone out with one single punch – why would she need a sword?”
King explained his goal when it came to relaunching such an iconic character and how his daughter inspired him. “I wanted to recreate that feeling of awe children get when they first see Wonder Woman. I wanted young girls to see beyond the shiny bracelets and tiara”. He continued, “She is a warrior, she’s a rebel and she is determined to bring justice to our world — that’s what I want people to remember.”

CBR also asked about the origin of Wonder Woman’s daughter, Trinity. “Batman has a son, Superman has a son, so there’s no reason why Wonder Woman shouldn’t have a daughter.” Regarding her appearance, King said he asked Sampere to give her a ponytail because his daughter usually has one. Dan explained how Trinity’s costume had to be both new and nostalgic. “Obviously, she has to look like her mother. But I also wanted to make her different and I did that with her costume.”
The biggest reveal of the interview came at the end. “You finally get to see who Trinity’s father is in issue #14” King teased. He goes on to say that Wonder Woman #14 “is one of my biggest projects yet.” Sampere added, “I’m very proud of number 14 and I’m excited for fans to see it.”
Wonder Woman #14 comes out on October 16, 2024, from DC Comics.
