The following contains major spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s new team of X-Men are already up against a monstrous menace that might be even more uncanny than the heroes themselves.

Uncanny X-Men #1 brings readers to the deserts of Teotihuacan where, at the base of the Pyramid of the Sun, Wolverine is waiting for the rest of his team to arrive. Soon enough, Logan is joined by none other than Rogue and Gambit, both of whom are more than happy to catch up with their longtime friend and ally. Of course, these mutant heroes haven’t gathered just to chat about recent events, but to take on the dragon Sadurang, who has not only made the Pyramid of the Sun its new residence but has taken on a new form to match.

Uncanny X-Men #1 marks the beginning of one of several new titles following the X-Men in the wake of mutantkind’s recently concluded war against Orchis. Ahead of the series’ release, acclaimed writer Gail Simone discussed the new characters set to make their debuts in Uncanny X-Men. Simone noted that the four upcoming mutants have powers inspired by real “hidden disabilities.” Simone also promised, “Everyone is my favorite while I’m writing them, this is why it’s been so fun to write this.”

The official synopsis for the first issue of Uncanny X-Men, as per Marvel Comics, makes a point of noting the team’s move from the former mutant island nation of Krakoa to the bustling streets of New Orleans. The synopsis reads “Making themselves at home in the Big Easy, the X-Men protect a world that hates and fears them! Join ROGUE, GAMBIT, NIGHTCRAWLER, JUBILEE and WOLVERINE on explosive super hero adventures. Uncanny as ever, the X-Men are back to saving the day mutant-style!”

The ancient Asgardian Dragon known as Sadurang made his first appearance back in 2019’s Tony Stark: Iron Man #2 by Gail Simone and Paolo Villanelli. Initially, Sadurang joined forces with the Dark Elf king Malekith, who set the dragon upon Tony Stark in the hopes of staving off the threat of one of the few heroes who posed a serious problem to his budding empire. Eventually, Sadurang was defeated by Iron Man, though that wasn’t the end of his comic book career. Only a year later, Sadurang would face off against Marvel’s Savage Avengers, leading to the dragon’s ultimate defeat.
