The Punisher has just discovered that one of his newest allies is also the long-lost daughter of the greatest S.H.I.E.L.D. agent of all time – Nick Fury.

Get Fury #4 finds the future Punisher, Frank Castle, traversing through Vietnam and into Hanoi alongside two new allies, Phuong Thuy Tram and her daughter Bian. While Frank’s mission to rescue Fury from a prison camp is dangerous, it is one that Phuong and Bian are happy to help him accomplish. And, while that might be surprising on the surface, the fact that Bian is also Fury’s daughter more than explains their willingness to see things through.

Get Fury brings readers to the Vietnam War at its height in 1971. Both Frank Castle and Nick Fury were busy with their bands of soldiers carrying out their respective missions. For Castle, that meant keeping watch over a relatively quiet patch of easygoing if unforgiving terrain. In contrast, for Fury, it meant traversing the harsh jungle only to be captured and traded off for his troubles. The series is also the latest of Ennis’ works to delve into the future Punisher’s military service in Vietnam.

One of Ennis’ most iconic Punisher stories set in the same era, 2003’s Born by Ennis and artist Darick Robertson, took place over four days. During that time, Castle’s platoon is stationed deep within the Firebase Valley Forge, where they are surrounded by enemy combatants, forcing them to take drastic action in the hopes of surviving long enough to escape. The series was published under Marvel’s MAX imprint, which also produced Ennis’ 2001 series titled Fury, as well as its sequel, Fury: My War Gone By.

Ahead of Get Fury‘s release, Ennis opened up about his research into the Vietnam War and what he has learned over the past two decades he has been writing about the subject. “I can see the stuff I got wrong- Born is set in October ’71, several months after US Marine Corps ground operations in Vietnam actually ended (so file under ‘You live and learn’),” Ennis noted. The acclaimed writer also touched on how he attempted to offer another side of such stories, including the recurring characters of Letrong Giap. “Beyond that, reading about the experience of Vietnamese people in the war led me to create the character of Letrong Giap, allowing me to take a look at things from the locals’ perspective- we see him in My War Gone By, first fighting the French as a Viet Minh guerrilla and later the Americans as an NVA officer, with his appearance at the end of that story forming part of Fury’s grim little epilogue.”

Get Fury #4 is on sale on August 21 from Marvel Comics.
