Image Comics has released a preview of Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans’ upcoming original graphic novel We Called Them Giants. The epic, post-apocalyptic story will hit shelves later this year.
We Called Them Giants tells the story of Lori as she wakes and finds the streets empty and nearly everyone gone. She is soon thrown into a world where she must scrape by in the ruins of civilization, starving and hiding from gangs when giant creatures arrive. Image teases the story as “The Last of Us meets The Iron Giant” and says that it will be perfect for fans of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s Descender and Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s Monstress. We Called Them Giants will be available as a hardcover graphic novel at local comic book shops on Oct. 30 and will released at local bookstores, Amazon, and other retailers on Nov. 12.

Image’s preview of We Called Them Giants gives a glimpse of the story’s post-apocalyptic setting as a group of characters remark about having their prayers answered. Their mission for survival takes a turn when they discover one of the incredible giants in the woods, completely changing their lives in the process.
Gillen and Hans Team Up Again After Successful RPG Comic Story
We Called Them Giants sees Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans team up after their successful series Die was released in 2018. A mix of horror and fantasy, Die’s story centered around role-playing games and was influenced by portal fantasy and the LitRPG genres. The story was also published by Image Comics and ran for twenty issues, concluding in 2021.
Minnie Mouse Becomes Captain Marvel in What If…?
Minnie Mouse will steal the spotlight in the upcoming one-shot, Marvel & Disney’s What…If? Minnie Became Captain Marvel.
Gillen and Hans’ Die was a breakout hit, quickly reaching the top of the sales charts and appearing on many Best of the Year lists. It won the British Fantasy Award for Best Comic / Graphic Novel in 2020 and 2021 and was a finalist for the Hugo Award in Best Graphic Story or Comic three times during its publication. The story’s success even saw Gillen and Hans create a role-playing game adaptation of the story, which was successfully funded through Kickstarter in 2022.
We Called Them Giants goes on sale in comic book shops on Oct. 30.
