CBR has an exclusive first look at pages from the upcoming comedy-horror hybrid graphic novel Goobers. Published by Vault Comics, Goobers is written by Cody Ziglar and features art by Ryan Lee.

Vault Comics describes Goobers as a “comedy-horror hybrid series that’s part Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Attack the Block, and Nope.” The graphic novel stars Clayton Lowe as he heads back to his small Southern hometown of Pine Cove after trying to leave it behind. His new friends from grad school soon meet his old friends from high school and discover a terrifying new reality: Pine Cove is now ground zero for “an infestation of body-snatching alien bugs.” Goobers is scheduled to be released on March 18, 2025.

CBR’s exclusive pages show an unsuspecting victim getting snatched up before the story turns to Clayton and his friends making their way to Pine Cove. Vault Comics teases Goobers as “Shaun of the Dead meets Nope with an injection of It” and describes the story as a “hugely humorous horrorfest.”

Ziglar and Lee Bring Horror to a Small Town in Goobers

Goobers writer Cody Ziglar, a writers’ room mainstay for Rick & Morty and Futurama, recently relaunched Marvel’s Deadpool comics ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine. Ziglar spoke about his love for horror films and infusing it with his past growing up in a small town for Goobers. “I love being able to smash some of my favorite genres, movies, and comics together with my love of North Carolina. I also loved being able to voice the frustration of growing up in a small town and being self-conscious about what they thought of me and how I lived my life.”

Ziglar moved back to his hometown for six months in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he found the inspiration for Goobers. “I kept wondering what made certain towns feel the same, even if there are small changes, and landed on the obvious answer: alien worms must invade and body-snatch folks. Goobers, in many ways, in just my comedic look on processing those emotions while also paying homage to some of my favorite films, like Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Creeps, Get Out, and Revenge of the Living Dead.

Goobers goes on sale on March 18, 2025, from Vault Comics.
