Marvel Comics has revealed a prequel comic book series for the upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The five-issue limited series and the Marvel animated show will debut later this year.

Per Marvel, the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man prequel comic will introduce a young Peter Parker, his supporting cast, and some of his most iconic villains. The series will lay plenty of groundwork for the adventures in the hotly anticipated animated series that chronicles Peter’s earliest days as Marvel’s premiere superhero. Christos Gage penned Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man with art by Eric Gapstur. Leonardo Romero designed the first issue cover for the series. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 also has an animated variant cover.

Marvel’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 description reads, “In Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Peter Parker is on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike what we’ve seen before and a style that celebrates the character’s earliest comic book roots. In this new comic book series, you can take the very first steps along with him as he discovers his powers, decides to become a hero, and even picks out his name and costume. Now Peter’s gotta survive an entire Freshman year as a newbie crime-fighting vigilante…and if you think you know how this story goes, you are in for a surprise!”

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man writer Guage teased what to expect from the upcoming comic prequel. “I’ve had the privilege of writing a lot of Spider-Man’s adventures, both in comics and in the Insomniac video games, but one thing I’ve never gotten the chance to do is recount his earliest exploits,” he said. “And the exciting part about this book is it’s a brand-new take on those formative times. While this is definitely Peter Parker, the Spidey we know and love, he’s got a new cast of supporting characters – including Nico Minoru, who you may know from Runaways – and some surprising twists.”

Marvel Animation’s Upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Created by Jeff Trammell and produced by Marvel Studios Animation, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man explores Peter’s origin story and early days as Spider-Man. The series is set in an alternate Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline where Norman Osborn becomes Parker’s mentor instead of Tony Stark.

Hudson Thames, who voiced Spider-Man in the Marvel Studios Animation series What If…?, will reprise the role in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Other cast members include Eugene Byrd, Grace Song, Hugh Dancy, Kari Wahlgren, Zeno Robinson, Charlie Cox, Paul F. Tompkins, and Colman Domingo.

Marvel’s prequel comic Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 will arrive in comic book shops on December 11, 2024.
