An Unexpected Marvel Character is Reliving Spider-Man: The Animated Series Darkest Moment

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Spectacular Spider-Men #8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s Spectacular Spider-Men just witnessed the darkest moment from Spider-Man: The Animated Series — and they have no idea why.

Spectacular Spider-Men #8 picks up not long after the destruction of K.N.A.I.V.E., the sentient artificial intelligence behind Arcade and Mentallo’s mind-bending Arcadium. While the immediate threat has been laid to rest, the traumas suffered by those trapped within the Arcadium are still being felt in demonstrable ways. For Juliet Marcos, that doesn’t just mean reeling from her time inside the Arcadium, but coming to terms with the fact that the woman she loved while there has no recollection of her whatsoever on the outside. And, as heartbreaking as that is, it is nothing compared to the sight of Juliet quickly falling to pieces as a being made of pure water.

The Arcadium, the latest iteration of Arcade’s infamous Murderworld, was introduced in the pages of Spectacular Spider-Men #1. Whereas other Murderworlds had been designed specifically to torture, maim, and dismember their victims as part of a twisted game show, the Arcadium was an entire world unto itself, one in which those confined to it could live out their wildest dreams. Originally, the villains behind the Arcadium had hoped to capture wealthy victims and steal away their fortunes without anyone ever catching on to their ruse, all at the behest of Maggia member Hammerhead.

Before long, the A.I. behind the Arcadium took on a life of its own. Crafted from stolen resources including Stark Tech, as well as software and hardware taken from the Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building and the X-Men’s Danger Room, the Arcadium had everything it needed for its rogue A.I. to create a body of its own. This gave rise to K.N.A.I.V.E. as it once stood, though it was only a matter of time before the mechanized monstrosity was brought down by the combined efforts of both Spider-Men and their allies.

Miles Morales is being tested like never before, and one of the greatest Marvel heroes of all time might just be the one to break him.

Juliet’s post-Arcadium fate is shocking to say the least, yet it isn’t the first time that Marvel fans have seen such a turn take the life of one of Spider-Man’s allies. During the ’90s Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Mary Jane Watson was kidnapped by the Green Goblin and thrust through a portal to worlds unknown. Though Mary Jane eventually returned, the form she came back in wasn’t actually her own. In fact, this Mary Jane wasn’t the original at all, but rather a water-clone created by Miles Warren, aka the Jackal, who had imbued his artifical M.J. with all the memories of the original. By the time the series ended, the truth had come out, yet Peter and Madame Webb were only just beginning on their journey to find and retrieve the real Mary Jane.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
