The Scarlet Witch’s new nemesis is finally back, and he might be unstoppable.

Scarlet Witch #5 finds the titular hero teaming up with an unlikely ally in the form of Daredevil to investigate what seems like the return of her newest foe — the Bricklayer. When a woman is attacked coming out of a subway tunnel, the heroes head down into the darkness to see what they can find. Unfortunately for them, the Bricklayer is very much back in action, and his infection might be spreading too fast for the Scarlet Witch to keep up with.

The ghoulish spirit known as the Bricklayer was first seen in Steve Orlando and Paul Azaceta’s story “Brick by Brick” from the pages of 2023’s Crypt of Shadows #1. This malevolent being is not an ordinary ghost or demon, but rather a living curse of sorts born from the very Earth itself. By inhabiting literal clay bricks that have been broken down and repurposed over time, the Bricklayer moves from place to place completely unseen, even after the subjects of his murderous hauntings have been razed to the ground by vengeful locals.

The introduction of the Bricklayer came not long after Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, took it upon herself to redefine her legacy as best she possibly could. To do so, the Scarlet Witch opened a small bookstore that was also home to the Last Door. This enchanted doorway doesn’t necessarily go anywhere in particular, but rather it brings people to Wanda from all across the world and even beyond. Anyone who has literally nowhere else to turn could find themselves face-to-face with the door, and all they have to do in order to ask the Scarlet Witch for her help is step through it and into her shop.

This shift in Wanda’s focus has come with more than just the development of the Last Door. The 2023 Scarlet Witch series in which it made its first appearance also marked the comic book debut of Marvel Cinematic Universe fan-favorite, Darcy Lewis. Portrayed in the MCU by Kat Dennings, the MCU’s Darcy was introduced in the first Thor film as an intern to Erik Selving and later an assistant to Jane Foster. In the years since, Darcy has played a role in a variety of MCU storylines, with appearances ranging from Avengers: Endgame to WandaVision.
