One of the greatest forces in the Marvel Universe is living through an especially uncomfortable family reunion.

Phoenix #2 finds the titular hero in the middle of one of the most harrowing hunts she has ever been a part of, as the Dark God Perrikus tears his way across the cosmos and through worlds she had only just recently saved from total annihilation. After some much-needed rest, Jean immediately leaps back into action attempting to save what seems like a stranded voyager in a dying spacecraft. Surprisingly, the lone wanderer is more than capable of handling things on his own, even if he is happy to see his daughter-in-law after so much time away.

Chris Summers, better known as Corsair, debuted in 1977’s X-Men #104 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum. The father of Scott, Alex, and Gabriel Summers, Chris and his wife Deborah were separated from their children when the plane he was flying was targeted by a passing Shi’ar spacecraft. While Chris was able to save Scott and Alex from the attack, he and his wife ended up becoming prisoners and harem to the Shi’ar Emperor D’Ken. For Deborah, this meant a tragic, gruesome death shortly after having her then-unborn son ripped away from her, whereas for Chris it meant a sentence of hard labor in pit mines.

Eventually, Chris took up the mantle of Corsair and led a prison break alongside fellow inmates who would become his crew of Starjammers. In the years that followed, the Starjammers made a name for themselves as cosmic pirates and freedom fighters. It wasn’t until the X-Men were called upon to help repair the M’kraan Crystal that Corsair was reunited with Scott, who by that point was a veritable veteran in his own right as the leader of the world’s foremost team of mutant heroes.

Phoenix is one of several series currently running as part of Marvel’s From the Ashes event, which follows various mutants in the wake of the end of the Krakoan Era. Among these are multiple team-up titles including X-Men by Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, X-Factor by Mark Russell and Bob Quinn, Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez, X-Force by Geoffrey Thorne and Marcus To, and NYX by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Francesco Mortarino. Although the first four of these titles all focus on a legitimate team of mutant heroes, NYX instead brings together Kamala Khan, Sophie Cuckoo, Anole, Prodigy, and Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, through a set of unlikely circumstances.
