The following contains major spoilers for Phoenix #1, on sale July 17 from Marvel Comics.

Marvel’s Phoenix has taken on a whole new mission as the X-Men rise From the Ashes.

As Jean Grey traverses the cosmos in the pages of Phoenix #1, she stumbles upon a world that is about to be wiped out of existence by its dying sun. Fortunately, Jean is more than capable of siphoning off the excess energy and setting things right. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean the denizens of this world are necessarily happy to see her, especially when they already know the destruction that the Phoenix herself is capable of wreaking.

The cosmic raptor known as the Phoenix Force was first seen in the pages of 1976’s X-Men #101 by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum. After sensing the immense psychic power of Jean Grey on Earth, the Phoenix Force took it upon itself to form a link with the young mutant hero. Following Jean’s apparent demise, the Phoenix Force took on her form and replaced her. Meanwhile, the real Jean healed from her wounds in a cocoon deep beneath the waters of Jamaica Bay.

In the years since, the Phoenix Force has played a variety of roles ranging from cosmic savior to would-be destroyer of worlds. The Phoenix’s destructive tendencies were on display more so than anywhere during the events of the Dark Pheonix Saga, which saw Jean overcome by the entity’s worst inclinations. It was only through an act of tragic self-sacrifice that Jean was able to stave off the Phoenix’s wrath, though it wasn’t long before the being would return.
