Wolverine’s latest apocalyptic story just gave Captain America the perfect send-off.

Wolverine: Revenge #2 opens to find the titular mutant antihero and the greatest S.H.I.E.L.D. agent of all time, Nick Fury, standing before several long lines of coffins draped in American flags. As both know all too well, Wolverine’s last mission to try and save the world was an utter disaster. Worse still, among those coffins that lay before them is one holding the remains of Captain America.

The world of Wolverine: Revenge was introduced with a bang, as Magneto’s iconic space-based hideout known as Asteroid M came crashing down in the middle of Canada. While the impact and fallout of this alone were enough to nearly obliterate North America as a continent, the ensuing electromagnetic pulse knocked out nearly all electronics across the entire globe. As such, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes were forced to face off against emerging threats with little resources and intel.

Among those to take charge during the events of the series’ first issue were Nick Fury, Wolverine, Captain America, and the Winter Soldier. When the latter three took to the battlefield in order to recover what may have been their only hope of turning things around, they were met with harsh resistance in the form of the mutant menace Mastermind. Not only was Mastermind leading his own brainwashed Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but one comprised of absolute powerhouses Colossus, Omega Red, Deadpool, and Sabretooth, who easily wiped out every hero other than Wolverine.

Marvel’s new Ultimate Spider-Man learns which of his incredible powers is a complete enigma to his smartest and most capable allies.

Artist Greg Capullo recently discussed the creative process behind Wolverine: Revenge, as well as the benefits of working directly with writer Jonathan Hickman on the series. Capullo noted that the pair have been “working in the way that I was trained: Marvel’s plot style… Jonathan affords me a lot of room to break things down in a way that feels right to me. Most of the dialogue is crafted after he sees the pages I’ve turned in. It’s very freeing.” Capullo added, “I feel that this is some of my best work in years as a result.”

Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
