Wolverine Goes Up Against a Classic Marvel Supervillain Team

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Wolverine: Deep Cut #3, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Wolverine is headed for the rematch of a lifetime, and even if he wins, he’ll have to relive it all over again.

Wolverine: Deep Cut #3 finds the titular mutant antihero having made his way deep into the heart of Mister Sinister’s sprawling lab. There, Wolverine faced off against and slayed the murderous villain Riptide, only to be confronted by the rest of the similarly villainous Marauders. Worse still, these are simply clones of the originals, and when Logan is done hacking his way through them, he’ll still have to deal with the originals before his job is finished.

The Marauders made their first full appearance in 1986’s Uncanny X-Men #211 by fan-favorite scribe Chris Claremont and artists John Romita Jr. and Bret Blevins. Brought together at the behest of Mister Sinister, the superpowered band of mercenaries known as the Marauders were formed in the hopes of furthering their malevolent benefactor’s secretive agenda regarding research into X-Gene mutations and human genetics. Initially, the Marauders were sent to kidnap the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, which not even the future Goblin Queen could prevent with her vast psionic abilities.

In the Marauders’ most infamous storyline, they were led by an unwitting Gambit to the home of the Morlocks, where the villains began wantonly killing any and all mutant victims they could find. This Mutant Massacre drew the attention of not only the X-Men, but even the likes of the Power Pack, Daredevil, and the Mighty Thor. Though the Marauders were eventually defeated, they still managed to kill numerous Morlocks in what has become one of the best known and most harrowing tales in Marvel Comics history.

Marvel’s latest lineup of X-Men is headed for a confrontation with one of the deadliest mutants the Multiverse has to offer.

Wolverine: Deep Cut is the latest in an ever-expanding line of throwback series from the fan-favorite pair of Claremont and Salazar, following the recently concluded Wolverine: Madripoor Knights. Ahead of the series’ release, Marvel editor Mark Basso explained the importance of the specific gap in time that Claremont and Salazar’s latest trip down memory lane is filling, explaining that “Deep Cut is going to finally step back and show what there just wasn’t time or space to show of Wolverine before he returned in #251, and make good on that title in all senses of the word!.. The story here will stand completely on its own, so if you have no idea what those plots entailed, rest assured you’ve got a complete adventure in this series.”

Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
