The X-Men have finally revealed the true cost being paid by the mutants who found a new life on Krakoa.

After months of mystery, X-Men #7 finally brings readers back to the moment the eponymous team had to step in and save their sleepy Alaskan home from a roving Wild Sentinel. As it turns out, tackling the threat fell largely on Magneto, who completely lost control of his powers in the process. Even worse, this was the first sign of the Resurrection-Linked Degenerative Sickness that Magneto is afflicted with, just as he is only the first of many mutants to come who will suffer the same exact fate.

The concept of the Resurrection Protocols was instrumental in the founding and maintaining of Krakoa as an independent mutant nation. Thanks to the combined powers of The Five, a group of mutants consisting of Egg, Elixir, Tempus, Proteus, and Hope Summers, as well as brain scans provided by Cerebro, previously deceased mutants and others were able to be brought back to life in new bodies on Krakoa. This process was one of the pillars of Krakoan society, with very few mutants being considered ineligible for resurrection.

Magneto’s time on Krakoa was largely defined by his seat on the Quiet Council, the ruling body for the mutant nation, yet that didn’t keep him from joining in any given fight for himself. This, coupled with the promise of resurrection, meant that Magneto was constantly willing to throw himself headfirst into even the most lethal of circumstances. While Magneto’s most recent resurrection came about under far different circumstances than most mutants have experienced, the effects of his numerous rejuvenations are now readily apparent, as he has lost the use of most of his powers and physical faculties.

After the fall of Krakoa, mutant-kind found itself spread all across the planet in search of new homes. For the X-Men, this meant making the move to a remote corner of Alaska where they could live in relative peace and continue on in their work. So far, the X-Men have maintained a mostly solitary status, with only the occasional confrontation with the locals cropping up to upset their new status quo. The team has also taken great pains to bring newly empowered mutants into the fold, all in the hopes of helping the next generation of their people find their purpose and place in the world.
