The West Coast Avengers Return With a Classic Marvel Villain

Marvel’s new West Coast Avengers team will see Tony Stark assemble a new team that includes a mysteriously redeemed Ultron. Iron Man, Spider-Woman, Firestar and War Machine will round out the rest of the team’s lineup.
West Coast Avengers‘ return was announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the ongoing series will debut this coming November with Gerry Duggan and Danny Kim at the helm. Marvel revealed a solicit for the first issue that gives fans more information about Ultron’s redemption and also previewed a lineup of variant covers for the debut issue from artists including Jeehyung Lee, Danny Kim and Gerardo Sandoval. West Coast Avengers #1 goes on sale Nov. 27, just in time for the title’s 40th anniversary.

Marvel’s solicit hints that Ultron may be just the first villain to appear in the series seeking to make amends: “Iron Man and War Machine have put together a new team of Avengers – one that includes villains seeking a path to redemption. Their case study? Ultron – who, against all odds, seems to be walking the straight and narrow…for now. But does the success of one guarantee the success of all? Spider-Woman and Firestar have their doubts. And can any amount of heroics really absolve Ultron of his past?”
Duggan Teases West Coast Avengers’ Themes of Redemption
In Marvel’s press release announcing the new West Coast Avengers debut issue, writer Gerry Duggan teased that themes of redemption will be at the core of the new ongoing series. “Redemption has been on my mind this year, and we’ll see who can be redeemed on the West Coast,” he said. “It’s a fun action story, but it’s also an Ultron tale – and one of my biggest Marvel swings yet.”

The world of Spider-Man: Reign is about to meet a whole new breed of Venom, and this time, their connection to Peter Parker is personal.
“I previously had the pleasure of writing a pretty great horror story about Ultron wearing Pym’s face, and this is a very different tale with one of my favorite Marvel characters, in one of my favorite legacy titles in the city that has been my home for so long,” Duggan continued, “Wait until you see what Danny Kim is cooking up.
