One of the most obscure members of the SHAZAM family has just proven that he doesn’t need magic to be powerful.
SHAZAM! #14 finds Billy Batson and Mary Marvel worrying about where their longtime friend and ally, Freddy Freeman, could have possibly ended up. Though they are fully aware of the threat of monsters looming overhead, they seem to be the only ones worried. As it turns out, Mary’s Uncle Dudley is ready and willing to put his own powers to the test should the moment arise, and he is confident that his trusty crowbar will get the job done.

Uncle Dudley was introduced as a civilian fan turned unexpected confidant during the events of 2022’s The New Champion of Shazam! by writer Josie Campbell and artist Evan Shaner. The story saw Mary Bromfield, better known as Mary Marvel, called back into action after a relatively short stint away. Throughout the series, Mary faces off against several foes, ranging from the lethally inexperienced Disaster Master to the descendants of classic foes such as Doctor Sivana.
Although Mary commanded the full might of the Shazam Family in The New Champion of Shazam!, she and her fellow young heroes have experienced major fluctuations in their abilities since then. During the events of DC’s Lazarus Planet, powers and magics all over the globe became unstable. Fortunately for Mary, she maintained her composure, even while Billy Batson was being tormented by the very gods who believed he had failed them as their champion.
The Last Hope for the DC Universe is One of Its Oldest – And Worst – Villains
The Green Arrow family are officially hunting down one of DC’s oldest villains, and he might be the only one who can save the entire world.
While Mary has continued her career as a superhero with little to no major issues, Billy hasn’t been nearly as lucky. After reconnecting with his long-lost mother, Billy suffered an immense amount of emotional distress in learning that she had reconciled her issues and embarked on a seemingly idyllic life with a new family. Though Billy understood this was no slight at him personally, his anger and frustration boiled over, leading him to unwittingly threaten the very fabric of reality with his powers as Shazam.
