The Boys Co-Creator Creator Reveals Why He Won’t Continue the Comic Series

The Boys co-creator Garth Ennis has addressed the potential continuation of the fan-favorite comic book series. The acclaimed writer revealed his hesitation, revealing why he would not pursue any more stories in that world presently.
In an interview with CBR, Ennis responded to a question about a return to The Boys by replying, “Not right now.” He explained that though he enjoyed writing the series’ main protagonists, Billy and Becky Butcher, he no longer wanted to put them through the wringer in the unique universe he created, which would be the expectation of The Boys‘ fans. “I always enjoy writing Butcher and his wife Becky, but I don’t really want to put them through any more shit,” he said. “An alternative universe story where they avoid the godawful things that happened to them and live happily ever after would be highly enjoyable for me to write, but I suspect might not satisfy the audience or, indeed, the publisher.”

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke shares the one thing he hopes his hit satirical superhero series never becomes.
Co-created with artist Darick Robertson and published by the DC Comics imprint Wildstorm, Ennis’ first issue of The Boys arrived in October 2006. The series was canceled after the first volume, consisting of six issues before Dynamite Entertainment acquired it. The Boys got eight more volumes, concluding its seventy-two-issue run in November 2012. The comic book series spawned several limited series spinoffs, including Herogasm, and inspired the immensely popular Amazon Prime Video The Boys Universe live-action TV franchise.
Aside from not wanting to put Butcher and his better half through hell again, Ennis has his plate full these days following the launch of his brand-new Image Comics horror imprint, Ninth Circle. His first book under the new banner, Freddie The Fix, with art by Mike Perkins (Captain America, Swamp Thing), will debut this December. The upcoming book is described as “a darkly humorous and horrific series that follows Freddie, a fixer who cleans up the messes left behind by the monstrous stars of Hollywood: werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, bogeymen, predators, and…things.”

A beloved creative collective will take on a double-page spread in a new comic.
Following Freddie the Fix, Ninth Circle aims to deliver double-sized monthly comic book issues containing stand-alone tales of terror. Upcoming comics include works by Marguerite Bennett, drawn by Jill Thompson (Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, the Scary Godmother series, Wonder Woman), Joe Pruett, illustrated by Butch Guice (The Flash, Winter Soldier, Birds of Prey), and Glass, with art by Bernard Chang (X-Men, Deadpool, Superman).
Garth Ennis‘ Freddie The Fix will arrive in comic book shops on December 11.
