The following contains major spoilers for Star Wars: Darth Vader #49, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Darth Vader saved the life of his own son, and it could be one of the biggest problems he has ever known.
Star Wars: Darth Vader #49 finds Luke Skywalker and his allies working tirelessly to escape the frozen wilderness of Caranthanax B’s South Pole before their Imperial pursuers can catch up to them. Unfortunately for them, that was never going to happen, although the Empire’s army isn’t the only concern the heroes have. As it turns out, Luke and his allies have landed themselves right in the middle of a fight between the Empire, Darth Vader’s Schism, and the members of the cybernetically enhanced M.A.R. Corps who have only recently regained their freedom. Most shocking of all, Darth Vader is more than willing to make sure no actual harm comes to his son, even if doing so means starting yet another fight on top of those already being waged.

Darth Vader, formerly known as Anakin Skywalker, has been building toward a major confrontation with his Sith master, Emperor Palpatine, for quite some time in the pages of Marvel Comics. During an encounter with the malevolent artificial intelligence known as the Scourge in 2023’s Star Wars: Darth Vader #39, the titular villain was forced to come to terms with the idea that the Emperor was always his one true nemesis. Not long after, Darth Vader embarked upon a quest to lead his rebellion from within the Empire.
In the process, Darth Vader has employed the help of the ominous fighting force known as the Schism Imperial who have worked alongside him in secret to subvert the Emperor’s endeavors and eventually usurp his place on the throne. Founded by the Sith Sly Moore, better known as Umbaran, the Schism Imperial sought to dismantle Palpatine’s reign long before Darth Vader took command of their efforts. Throughout their journeys, Vader and the Schism Imperial traversed harsh terrains, including the Emperor’s former world — Exegol.
30 Strongest Lightsaber Users In Star Wars, Ranked
Lightsabers are Star Wars’ signature weapon for the Jedi and Sith, but some lightsaber wielders quickly prove themselves masters in combat.
While Darth Vader has been leading his subversive charge against the Emperor, Marvel Comics’ mainline Star Wars ongoing series has seen Luke Skywalker similarly driven into the depths of the Dark Side of the Force. May’s Star Wars #43 by Charles Soule, Steven Cummings, and Jethro Morales saw Luke’s consciousness come face-to-face with a powerful Sith within the confines of a twisted Kyber crystal. During the experience, Luke had to contend with his own worst memories, as well as the fears they instilled within him, all before eventually freeing the Kyber crystal of the dark influence that had been imbued within it.
