Marvel’s original Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus, made his debut in the pages of 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #3 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. A brilliant scientist and world-renowned inventor, a tragic accident fused Otto’s body to a set of four mechanized tentacles that he used to carry out delicate and dangerous atomic research. This incident also caused a great deal of brain damage that, coupled with his new abilities, irrevocably altered Otto’s persona, ultimately driving him to take up a life of violent crime in his overtly narcissistic pursuits.
As one of Spider-Man’s oldest foes, Doctor Octopus has played key roles across several storylines. Apart from being the founder of the original Sinister Six and several of its more recent incarnations, Doctor Octopus also managed to save his own life by swapping bodies with Peter Parker. This kicked off the infamous Superior Spider-Man saga, which has continued to have lasting consequences in the pages of Marvel Comics to this very day.
Marvel has officially revealed the one mutant responsible for single-handedly ensuring mutantkind a place in the world of 2099.
The current Ultimate Universe, known as Earth-6160, was first glimpsed in the pages of 2023’s Ultimate Invasion #1 by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch. This world, uncovered by the villainous Reed Richards of the original Ultimate Universe, best known as the Maker, was nearly identical to that of the original Ultimate Universe. As such, the Maker was able to alter its history and prevent the rise of most of what would be its mightiest heroes. Instead of entering an age of heroes of its own, Earth-6160 was lorded over by the Maker and his Shadow Council until the villain’s dramatic albeit temporary defeat at the hands of its very own Iron Man – Howard Stark.
