Spider-Gwens Darkest Secret is a Major Problem for the Marvel Universe

[[{“value”:”

Spider-Gwen’s transition to the primary Marvel Universe hasn’t gone easy, mostly because she has been hiding it from everyone she can.

After a near-fatal encounter with Kraven the Hunter, the titular hero of Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider #2 awakens to find herself being looked after by her fellow Spiders – Miles Morales, Peter Parker, and Cindy Moon. While her allies are more than happy to explain how they found Gwen, it turns out that she hasn’t been so upfront with them about her situation. Not only has she neglected to tell them about her move to their reality, but she can’t even bring herself to tell them why.

The Gwen Stacy of Earth-65, better known as Spider-Gwen, made her debut in the pages of 2014’s Edge of Spider-Verse #2 by writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez. Like the original, this Gwen was close friends with her world’s Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, even if she was the one bitten by a genetically engineered spider and imbued with great power. Tragically, she didn’t realize the responsibility that comes with it until after accidentally killing her world’s Lizard, who was actually Peter trying to replicate her heroism.

Since her introduction, Gwen has gone by a variety of code names, including Spider-Woman and Ghost-Spider, the latter of which is her current official moniker in the comics. Over the years, Spider-Gwen has played a key role in numerous Multiversal storylines. Most recently, she faced off against her own world’s version of Doctor Octopus, Orlando Octavius, and a strain of Carnage that bonded to her reality’s Mary Jane. Though the villain was ultimately defeated, Mary Jane parted ways with her in the hopes of learning to control her symbiotic other.

Shortly after her encounter with Doc Ock and Carnage, Gwen was besieged by a murder of ominous crows, only to be rescued by the Time Variance Authority’s very own Ouroboros. She was subsequently transferred to the primary Marvel Universe, the reality of Earth-616 under the T.V.A.’s watch. Unfortunately, her move to Earth-616 hasn’t been easy, especially when she is hesitant about the idea of both living under a false identity and trying to carry on the legacy of the Gwen who came before her.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
