One of Wolverines Most Underrated Enemies Got a Powerful Upgrade

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Wolverine #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Wolverine’s latest rematch gave one of his most underrated enemies a powerful new upgrade — and it’s going to be a serious problem.

Wolverine #1 finds the titular hero as far from the rest of the world as possible, though even the frozen wilderness of the Northwest Territories isn’t far enough removed to keep friend and foe alike from tracking him down. Of course, Wolverine is still more than a match for Silas Burr, better known as Cyber, just as he always has been. When Cyber wanders through the forest injured and delirious, it seems like his time is up. As it turns out, there is something besides Wolverine lurking in these woods, and this ancient entity is willing to save Cyber’s life if it means getting the chance to strip the world of every last ounce of Adamantium.

In his first appearance in Peter David and Sam Kieth’s story “Blood Hungry (Part 1) – First Scent” from the pages of 1991’s Marvel Comics Presents #85, Silas had only recently undergone his transformation from cold-blooded killer to superpowered mercenary, which entailed lacing his skin with the same Adamantium that encased Wolverine’s bones. At the time, Cyber was in a drug cartel operating in Madripoor, where he encountered Wolverine or Patch. Their shared history as soldiers had left the two with a deep disdain for one another, and Cyber took the opportunity to strike out at his old compatriot.

Over the following years, Cyber and Wolverine clashed on numerous occasions. Along the way, Cyber would also come into conflict with various mutant super teams such as X-Factor and Excalibur. It was during a battle with the latter of the two when Cyber was finally imprisoned for his crimes, which ultimately set the villain up for a gruesome demise. At the time, the future mutant despot known as Genesis was residing in the present. Genesis had his Dark Riders break Cyber out of prison, only to deliver him to the time-displaced villain’s stronghold where beetles devoured the still-living Silas until all that remained was his Adamantium shell.

This marked only the first death of Cyber, who was relatively quick to return to the land of the living like so many other comic book characters before him. After being given a second shot at defeating Wolverine, Cyber was again killed off. This sent Cyber’s soul straight to Hell, where he would get the chance to escape death again by aligning himself with a demon who had dreams of being a hero. Together, Silas and the demon escaped Hell, and upon returning to Earth embarked on a mission to reform the superpowered Stingers, albeit unsuccessfully.

Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
