The future of Marvel Comics proves exactly which mutant is responsible for ensuring the salvation of her people – And it is no one most fans have ever heard of.

Annihilation 2099 #4 brings readers not just to the not-so-far-flung future of the Marvel Universe, but to the mutant paradise known as Oasis X that exists within it. There, an elderly mutant prepares to leave the mortal world surrounded by her friends and loved ones, all of whom are well aware that if it weren’t for her, none of them would have a home whatsoever. As it turns out, this mutant is none other than Chantal, the very same whose life was irrevocably altered during her time living on the once proud island of Genosha.

Long before Krakoa, there was Genosha, a small island nation billed as a paradise on Earth for mutants everywhere. Tragically, the ultra-wealthy humans who called Genosha their home weren’t interested in making life better for mutants, but in subjugating them in every way possible. With the help of the villainous David Moreau, better known as the Genegineer, once ordinary humans were transformed into mutants against their will and enslaved, including Chantal.

First seen in the pages of 2023’s Astonishing Iceman #3 by Steve Orlando and Vincenzo Carratù, Chantal was forcefully imbued with quite literally endless stamina when she was subjugated to the Genegineer’s experiments on Genosha. Years later when she made her debut, she was under attack from the Orchis Hounds who had been unleashed to hunt down free mutants. Fortunately, Spider-Man was there to help stave off the threat at hand until backup could arrive in the form of the title’s titular mutant hero.

Annihilation 2099 has given readers numerous glimpses all across the cosmos of Marvel Comics’ future timeline. One of the biggest shakeups that the series has offered is the introduction of the new Nova 2099, who just so happens to be none other than Wolverine himself. As revealed in Steve Orlando and Ibraim Roberson’s story “The Last Nova” from the pages of Annihilation 2099 #1, the fan-favorite mutant hero survived to see a whole new breed of Annihilation event sweep across the Marvel Universe. As such, Logan was imbued with more power than ever before, becoming the last member of the Nova Force still standing.
