Written by Jeff Lemire and with Diego Olortegui handling the art, the fresh-off-the-presses JSA #1 kicks off a new era for the legacy super-group. The issue starts with typical DC hero fare, following Infinity Inc. stepping in to protect the world while classic Justice Society of America members are missing in action.

The story unfolds with the type of character and action beats, as well as the clever caped crusader showcases that fans have come to expect from Lemire, most notably between hero Obsidian and his sister, Jade. Everything familiar Lemire and Olortegui set up washes away quickly after a shocking revelation in the final pages of the issue — one that will have readers questioning everything: Obsidian isn’t who he says he is.

Obsidian, at least as presented in JSA #1, is actually Johnny Sorrow — one of the most dangerous and enduring villains in the JSA’s rogue gallery. And Johnny’s not alone. Sorrow’s reveal sets up JSA’s antagonistic, albeit derivatively named Injustice Society, a group of storied super-villains to counteract the series’ title squad. “When you have a team that’s as huge and powerful as the JSA, you’ve got to have something that can counter that,” explained Lemire in an interview with Comic Book Club.

According to Lemire, the Injustice Society’s scheme will unfold over a year of issues, and their conflicts will have ramifications throughout the entire DC universe. “What’s great about the JSA, this sense of legacy and history is there, but the flip side of it, where it’s evil and dark… It’s a lot of fun,” Lemire said. These legacies, better or worse, will play a key role in the unfolding story.

JSA #1 is now available in comic shops, kicking off what promises to be an action-packed and game-changing year for the Justice Society and the DC universe as a whole.
