Moebius’ Cult Classic Magazine Returns With Comic Icons Attached

Moebius’ cult classic magazine Metal Hurlant is poised to make its return, fifty years after its first publication. An all-star lineup of creative talent will contribute to the new anthology.

A Kickstarter campaign for the quarterly anthology is set to launch soon, and interested supporters can be notified on the website when the campaign goes live. According to BleedingCool, the creative line-up for the new Metal Hurlant includes some of the biggest names in comics, including Brian Michael Bendis (Daredevil), Matt Fraction (Uncany X-Men), Mark Waid (Captain America) and many more. The first 272-page volume is expected to be published in the spring of 2025, where it will be available on newsstands, comic book stores, book stores, via subscription and through Kickstarter.

The anthology will include new stories as well as archived stories, out-of-print short stories from Metal Hurlant founders Moebius, Philippe Druillet and Jean-Pierre Dionnet which were previously unavailable in English. The original Metal Hurlant, which was published in French, is also being collected in volume form. The Kickstarter campaign teases that Metal Hurlant secured some of the best comics creators from around the world and promises that the new quarterly anthologies will provide “insightful and biting cultural reportage” as well as “classic stories from the masters of the original run”, with BleedingCool indicating the anthology will also have cultural commentaries, personal essays and interviews that include Ted Chiang, William Gibson, Allan Moore and Denis Villeneuve.

Metal Hurlant was originally created in 1974 and became highly influential as one of the first mature and “adult” comic books. It ran until 1987 and was later revived in 2002, 2004 and 2020 in multilingual editions. The latest revival aims to celebrate the magazine’s French roots, intending to introduce readers around the world to the brand’s established past while also producing exciting new content from some of the top creators around the world like Bendis and Peach Momoko.
