Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Reveals the Future of an Original Icon

[[{“value”:”

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Darkest Hour is finally over, and there is only one franchise veteran still standing long after the dust has settled.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 takes readers on an interdimensional saga set amidst the backdrop of potentially reality-ending events. As Dark Specter’s forces close in on the few remaining heroes the multiverse has left to offer, Billy Cranston and his allies take it upon themselves to rend the Morphin Grid itself asunder in a bid to purge it of their would-be overlord’s evil influence. While this plan ultimately succeeds, it also means that Billy has his work cut out for him repairing the damage he caused to the Morphin Grid. Fortunately, Billy is more than up to the task, even decades after the rest of his team has seemingly retired from the action-packed lifestyle of a Power Ranger entirely.

BOOM! Studios’ epic Power Rangers saga began with the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0 on Jan. 13, 2016. Written by Kyle Higgins, Steven Orlando, and Mairghread Scott and featuring art by Hendry Prasetya, Corin Howell, and Daniel Bayliss, the issue marked the beginning of a whole new story that, while based on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers that longtime fans know best, took things in a decidedly different direction. This was most prominent with the addition of characters such as Lord Drakkon, who have become franchise icons in their own right in the years since.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #1 is the culmination of not just BOOM! Studios’ ongoing Power Rangers story, but of the long-running Darkest Hour event, which has seen the original series’ ominous overarching antagonist finally break into the heroes’ reality. After infecting the Morphin Grid with his evil influence, Dark Specter took over nearly every Power Ranger connected to the Morphin Grid. This left the entire multiverse with a disturbing lack of heroes to fend off the threat, let alone to stand in the way of Dark Specter’s overwhelming forces.

When it was announced that BOOM! Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was coming to a close, acclaimed writer Melissa Flores opened up about Darkest Hour and its finale. “After nearly two years, the Darkest Hour comes to a close,” Flores stated. “This event has been one of the biggest tasks of my career, but I’ve enjoyed every single, heart-wrenching minute. Although I put our poor Rangers through the wringer, I hope the ending is as satisfying for the reader as it was for me to write it.”
