Latest Power Rangers Reboot Just Made Rita Repulsa Unrecognizable

[[{“value”:”

The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers Prime #1, on sale now from BOOM! Studios.

The Power Rangers’ original nemesis is back in a brand-new form, and she has a disturbing lack of heroes to fight.

Power Rangers Prime #1 drops readers into the middle of a sprawling story unlike any that the franchise has ever seen before. In this world, humanity is lorded over by their Eltarian oppressors, all while only a single Power Ranger stands against them from the shadows. As bad as that might be, it is the sudden arrival of Rita Repulsa on Earth that looks to make things even worse. At least, that is what fans have come to expect from the Evil Space Witch, although this new iteration of her may not quite be the villain who audiences know and love.

Rita Repulsa was the very first nemesis that the original heroes of 1993’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ever knew, and has gone on to become one of the most iconic villains of the entire franchise. An Evil Space Witch and the leader of the likes of Squatt, Baboo, Goldar, and Finster, Rita Repulsa wielded vast amounts of intrinsic power and dark magic alike. Rita was directly responsible for Tommy Oliver’s turn towards darkness and his rise as the Green Ranger, not to mention countless other plots against the heroes over the years.

In the pages of BOOM! Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and tie-in books, readers saw Rita Repulsa’s history explored in more depth than any of her small screen appearances afforded. This opened the door for her relationship with the Phantom Ranger to be explored right alongside the true extent of her abilities, all before her personal downfall at the hands of her own twisted father, Master Vile. In the years that followed, Rita came into her own as more than just a simple, one-dimensional villain, going so far as to usurp her father’s place as the right hand of Dark Specter before ultimately turning on the latter in kind.

This Iconic Marvel Team Is Perfect for the Next Power Rangers Crossover

The Power Rangers aren’t all that similar to the X-Men, but this actually makes them one of the best candidates for a crossover with the mutants.

Power Rangers Prime completely rewrites the history of the eponymous heroes, with the Rangers having been hunted to near extinction by an invading Eltarian Empire. In the wake of the Rangers’ defeat, their story has been reduced to little more than myth, whereas the likes of the VR Troopers have stepped up as their world’s premier team of teenage superheroes. Fortunately, there is still one Ranger in the form of Lauren Shiba who has made it her mission to save the world from its would-be alien oppressors and show everyone exactly how powerful the Morphin Grid can be in the right hands.
