[[{“value”:”

Dynamite Comics will publish a new Barbarella series ahead of a remake of the 1960s cult classic starring Sydney Sweeney. Recently released cover art and interior pages show Barbarella’s new space-faring adventures across the galaxy.

The new Barbarella series comes from writer Blake Northcott (Catwoman, Vampirella) and artist Anna Morozova (2,000 AD). As revealed by Dynamite, the new series has the character relaxing with her alien pet companion Vix after saving the universe. She soon discovers that not all pleasure planets are created equal, and the series will find her on adventures throughout the cosmos as she runs into “all manner of unscrupulous figures along the way”. While an exact date has not been announced, Barbarella #1 is planned to be released this October.

Comicbook.com reported that the new Barbarella series will put “a major emphasis of the run [on] honoring Barbarella‘s original creator and those who preceded them.” This will be done through tone and style, with writer Northcott mirroring 1960s comics by Barbarella‘s creator, Jean-Claude Forest, as well as the film starring Jane Fonda. “There are only a handful of sci-fi/fantasy characters who have endured for decades, and Barbarella is right at the top of the list, alongside Leia, Ripley, and Sarah Connor,” Northcott said. “Telling one of her stories is the opportunity of a lifetime — how could I say no to that?”

New Barbarella Comics Arrive as Sydney Sweeney FIlm Gains Traction

A remake of the cult classic Barbarella film was recently confirmed with Sydney Sweeney taking on the starring role in the production. Producers Jane Goldman and Honey Ross have been eyeing the acclaimed filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Ant-Man, Last Night in Soho) to direct. For now, the film remains in development, and it may be some time before more news is confirmed. Both Sweeney and Wright currently have projects that might keep Barbarella from moving forward in the near future.

The original Barbarella film was directed by Roger Vadim and starred Jane Fonda as the titular character. At the time of its release in 1968, the film received lukewarm reviews but went on to develop a cult following. Numerous sequels, remakes and other adaptations of Jean-Claude Forest’s source material have been planned over the years, but none have actually entered production.

Barbarella #1 is scheduled to be released this October by Dynamite.
