CBR has an exclusive look at Black Panther‘s story in Amazing Adventures, the second volume in Marvel’s first-ever middle-grade anthology series, Marvel Super Stories. The book features all-new comics by 15 all-star cartoonists.

CBR’s exclusive pages are from the volume’s six-page Black Panther story, which is written and illustrated by John Jennings. The story begins with an overview of the character of King T’Challa and his role in defending the people of Wakanda, with the comic then setting its scene one day before T’Challa’s birthday, with Princess Shuri visiting him as he listens to old-school hip-hop records. The two have a discussion over their taste in music, with T’Challa enjoying how hip-hop bridges Wakandan and American cultures, while Shuri expresses her love for Afrobeat music. Marvel Super Stories: Amazing Adventures is available now.

Shuri then escorts her brother to her laboratory where she unveils a special device she made just for him. She calls the large device a digital sampler, demonstrating how it is able to use the sounds of concerts from many years ago, and even going so far back as to allow T’Challa to hear his parents’ voices. T’Challa is initially intrigued by the device, but he quickly becomes dismayed as he realizes it reminds him of something more ominous.

An urgent matter from General Okoye interrupts T’Challa and Shuri’s conversation, and T’Challa heads out as the Black Panther to fight a giant creature in the Techno-Organic Jungle outside the city. The threat ends up being the Black Panther’s archenemy, Ulysses Klaw aka The Klaw Monster. The two clash in an all-out brawl before Princess Shuri’s machine remixes the creature and gets the situation under control.

New York Times bestselling illustrator John Jennings, who wrote and illustrated the Black Panther story, has also edited both volumes in the series. Speaking in an interview with CBR about Amazing Adventures, Jennings described his newfound love for the Black Panther character, saying, “My love for the Black Panther came recently because I became really interested in afrofuturism as a cultural movement. When I saw the film and started to think about the ramifications of what that character means, I retroactively started to fall in love with the character more. I could see that this was really an afrofuturist character.”
