DC’s Black Canary is “Best of the Best” in Tom King’s New Miniseries

Award-winning writer Tom King will team up with artist Ryan Sook this November for a new Black Canary limited series from DC Comics. The story will see Black Canary face off against Lady Shiva in battle to be the top hand-to-hand combatant in the DC Universe.
DC revealed the cover art and solicit for Black Canary: Best of the Best #1. The action-packed series features a main cover by series artist Ryan Sook as well as variant covers including a wraparound from Otto Schmidt (DC vs. Vampires: World War V), that showcases Black Canary’s various appearances throughout the DC Universe. Black Canary: Best of the Best #1 goes on sale Nov. 27.

DC’s solicit for the series hints at Black Canary being joined by some of the DC Universe’s most skilled fighters in the series: “Black Canary faces her toughest opponent yet, Lady Shiva, in a battle to determine who is the single greatest hand-to-hand fighter in the DC Universe. To make it to the final round, Black Canary will need all her fighting skill and ability, plus additional training from some of DC’s most accomplished fighters, including Batman, Wildcat, and even her mother, the original Black Canary!”
Black Canary Prepares for the “Match of the Millenium” in New DC Series
An epic showdown between Black Canary and the martial arts grandmaster and assassin-for-hire Lady Shiva is one that writer Tom King has been eager to write for years. “I’ve been wanting to tell this story for a few years, and I’m really excited for fans to see what Ryan and I have planned for Dinah,” King said in DC’s press release announcing the series. “He’s got the perfect art style for this series, and fans will feel every punch and kick thrown from the first issue to the finale.”

Black Canary was one of the earliest female superheroes in the DC Comics Universe, having debuted as Dinah Drake in August 1947, and later as Dinah Laurel Lance in October 1983. The character has been included in the Birds of Prey and the Justice League of America and is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who, in recent versions of the character, also has metahuman abilities.
