Hot off of her critically acclaimed Black Label miniseries by Mariko Tamaki and Javier Rodriguez, Zatanna is receiving a brand-new series as part of DC’s “All In” initiative, designed to spotlight the many amazing characters that reside within the DC Universe. The new series will be written AND drawn by star artist, Jamal Campbell, who launched the current Superman series with writer Joshau Williamson following Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The new series, which will be a six-issue miniseries (at least to start), will launch on February 19th, and besides Campbell (who will also be coloring the comic), the book will be lettered by Ariana Maher.
James Gunn Responds to Longtime Rumor That Dua Lipa Will Join the DC Universe as Zatanna
Was Dua Lipa’s “Houdini” a teaser to her upcoming role as the DC Comics magician?
The series will be about Zatanna getting her stage crew back together with a plan towards having a calmer regular routine than she has been dealing with in the last few yesrs (of comic book time), but her plans are ruined when a new villain known as The Lady White kidnaps her crew, and forces Zatanna down a chaotic path to rescue her friends.
Here are Campbell’s designs for the cast of the series…
In a press release by DC, Campbell described the plot for the series as, “Wonder, mystery, mischief, and fishnets make up the core of a quintessential Zatanna Zatara stage show, and it’s high time she returned to the spotlight. In her newest DC Comics series, Zatanna is dragged down a rabbit hole of cursed swords, hidden truths, and multiple brushes with death. She’ll need all her wits and every spell she can muster in order to make it out the other side in one piece.”
DC Turns a Classic Justice League Hero’s Origin Story into a Nightmare
DC’s Black Label rewrites Zatanna’s origin — turning her journey to become the world’s greatest sorcerer into an abject horror story.
Campbell, who is also well known for his work with NK Jemisin on Far Sector, and with Brian Michael Bendis and David Walker on Naomi (Naomi, of course, received her own TV serries, and it is very likely that Far Sector‘s Jo Mullein will appear in the upcoming Lanterns TV series, or perhaps somewhere else in the new DC multimedia universe), discussed in a DC press release what appeals to him about Zatanna:
“It’s been a dream tackling Zatanna’s world, introducing brand-new allies and adversaries as well as bringing back some old classics that haven’t been seen in a while. I’m weaving all my appreciation of the character into these pages in order to show and prove what makes Zatanna so magical.”

Zatanna #1 is due out on February 19, 2025.
