DC’s Absolute Universe has finally given readers a glimpse at the new Krypton, and it is worse than any version before it.
Absolute Superman #1 opens to the sight of a sprawling cityscape dotted with towering volcanoes spewing all manner of magma and ash. As it turns out, this is none other than the Krypton of DC’s Absolute Universe. And, while it is still a highly advanced world like nearly every other version of the planet seen in the pages of DC Comics, this Krypton is ruled by ancient, archaic laws making it so anyone looking to make a meaningful difference has an uphill battle on their hands, at the very least.

The homeworld of Kal-El and all other Kryptonians, Krypton was first seen alongside the Man of Steel in his own introductory appearance in Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s story “Superman, Champion of the Oppressed,” from the pages of 1938’s Action Comics #1. In most versions of the story, Krypton was a highly advanced world ruled by science and logic, whose people were among the strongest and brightest in the known universe. Unfortunately, the planet was bound for destruction, leading Superman’s parents to send the infant Kal-El away in an escape pod that would bring him all the way to Earth.
Though most iterations of Krypton have been destroyed in their respective takes on the Superman mythos, small pieces of it have survived in various ways. In the case of the city of Kandor, the entire landscape and its population were stolen away by Brainiac. This not only ensured the survival of numerous Kryptonians, it opened the door for an entirely new aspect of Superman’s history to be unraveled in the present.

Superman has just come face-to-face with his very own father, and it changes everything the Man of Steel thought he knew about his legacy.
The Superman of the Absolute Universe is just one major DC Comics character to receive the Absolute treatment in the wake of his reality’s rise. This was charted in the recently released DC All In Special #1, which saw the Justice League Unlimited defeat the villainous Darkseid, who had bonded to the near-unstoppable Spectre by force. After his apparent destruction, Darkseid’s consciousness traversed time and space before entering and ultimately merging with the Absolute Universe as a whole. This culminated in the grim, overtly dour timeline that is now known as DC’s Absolute Universe.
