Wonder Woman’s greatest love just turned a gleaming vision of the afterlife into another reason to mourn.

“Elysium” by Tom King and Khary Randolph (from the pages of Wonder Woman #15) brings readers to the shores of its eponymous locale, a near-perfect vision of the afterlife where those graced by the gods may rest when their time on Earth has come to an end. Unfortunately for Steve Trevor, no matter what wonders Elysium offers him or who it might bring his way, there is simply nothing about it he can truly enjoy. At least, not without his beloved Diana Prince by his side, and the truth is so painfully evident that even the gods themselves can see it for what it is.

Steve Trevor is quite possibly Wonder Woman’s oldest ally and love interest, with his first appearance coming right alongside the heroic Amazon’s own in William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter’s closing story from 1942’s All-Star Comics #8. A renowned United States Air Force pilot, Trevor famously crashed down on Paradise Island, discovering the Amazons and their world completely by accident. While most others would be cut down for the crime of merely setting foot on Paradise Island as a man, Steve Trevor was instead cared for by Diana and her allies before being escorted back to the modern world by Wonder Woman herself.

It was in the pages of Wonder Woman #14 that the modern day Steve Trevor lost his life as part of a plot carried out by the titular hero’s new worst enemies. Though Steve has been an ever-present fixture in much of Wonder Woman’s life, the past year has seen various wedges driven between them on just as many fronts. This has all been made possible thanks to Steve’s position in the United States military, through which Wonder Woman’s enemies within the government have been able to manipulate him for their own ends.

The most dangerous of Wonder Woman’s current enemies is by far the Sovereign, first seen at the outset of King and Sampere’s current run in the pages of 2023’s Wonder Woman #1. Rather than being an out-in-the-open villain as so many others Wonder Woman and her fellow heroes have faced, the Sovereign is a figure who has existed for years without anyone ever catching on to his presence. As the secret king of the United States, the Sovereign wields immense power, using his Lasso of Lies to maintain his unseen iron grip over the nation and many of its purportedly free leaders. Throughout the course of the Sovereign’s war on Wonder Woman, he has employed the use of every threat possible to beat the Amazon warrior into submission, ranging from overt violence to force isolation to orchestrating the murder of the man she loves the most.
