DC Heroes, the groundbreaking superhero role-playing game that debuted in 1985, is back—this time for a special 40th-anniversary re-release aiming to be crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Preorders are now available for the definitive archival editions of the DC Comics tabletop classic, which upgrade packaging and materials relative to the original release while keeping the classic gameplay intact.
Cryptozoic Entertainment (Cerebus Engine Game), in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, will team up for the revival. The campaign features two classic box sets, plus a collection of reprinted adventure and sourcebooks, which boast artistic contributions from legendary DC creators like Jack Kirby, Alan Moore, and George Perez. The re-release includes premium extras such as custom oversized dice, slipcases with iconic DC artwork, and a game master’s screen.
The Absolute Universe Reinvents DC Heroes: Here’s Why It Belongs in the DCU
The DCU has already announced new versions of characters like Superman and Swamp Thing, but could the Absolute Universe fit into this bold new world?
Amid a TTRPG boom, DC Heroes RPG is still celebrated for its innovative mechanics, most notably for its unique Attribute Points system, and exploding dice mechanics. The game, which lets players become their favorite DC superheroes or create ones of their own, has endured as a fan favorite over the four decades since its release, despite being out of print for two of them.
DC Heroes last printed its 3rd Edition in 1993. Then developer Mayfair Games lost its license to DC characters shortly after, ultimately selling its system and rules to a small company called Pulsar Games.
5 Young DC Heroes the DCU Must Use (and 5 It Can Skip)
While some young heroes are needed to establish legacy in James Gunn’s DC Universe, other supporting cast members may struggle to find their footing.
Ray Winninger, co-designer of the original DC Heroes and former Dungeons & Dragons exec, will oversee DC Heroe s‘ resurrection, much to its OG player’s delight. The Kickstarter campaign hoping to fund its publishing is open to backers until Dec 18, with rewards tentatively marked to ship in Oct. 2025. Interested parties can make donations starting at $60.
