One of DC Comics’ most underrated heroes is now responsible for keeping tabs on the entire Justice League.

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1 brings readers to the Justice League Unlimited’s new orbiting Watchtower high above Earth, where Wonder Woman is busy giving Renee Montoya the lay of the land. As it turns out, there is some unseen force that appears to be worming its way into the Watchtower’s systems, yet no one aboard has any idea who or what the threat actually is. As such, it has fallen on the Question not just to investigate this mystery, but to keep an eye on the entirety of the Watchtower and all the heroes within it, no matter how heroic they might seem on the surface.

Renee Montoya’s journey to becoming the Question spanned years in the pages of DC Comics. Originally introduced in Batman: The Animated Series‘ “Pretty Poison” in 1992, Renee Montoya was created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian to serve as Gotham City’s latest detective. Over the course of her career on the silver screen, Montoya became a fast fan-favorite, leading to her first appearance in the comics just a few months after her televised debut. Although Montoya was a dedicated member of the GCPD, it was clear that she was bound for something greater from almost the very beginning.

Eventually, Montoya found a mentor in the form of Vic Sage, the original Question whose earliest iteration first appeared in the pages of 1967’s Blue Beetle #1 in Steve Ditko’s story, “Who is the Question?” Originally, Vic Sage was an investigative reporter turned vigilante, though his subsequent iterations would see the character slowly shift into more of a conspiracy theorist role. It was after Vic Sage’s demise that Montoya took up his mantle as the Question, kicking off a whole new career for one of Gotham City’s greatest non-cave-dwelling detectives.

DC’s Favorite Archer is Returning to His Roots for the Best Reason of All

The Green Arrow has headed back to where his story all began, and for the first time it’s a trip he is actually meant to be enjoying.

The new Justice League Unlimited was founded shortly after the events of DC Comics’ Absolute Power event, which saw Amanda Waller wage war on the heroes of the DC Universe. When Waller launched her initial attack, the Titans had taken the place of the Justice League, leaving the world with a severe lack of organized heroes to protect it. Though Waller and her Amazo androids were ultimately defeated, the impact of her actions made it painfully clear that the world not only needed a Justice League, but a bigger, better version of it than ever before. As such, the Justice League Unlimited was formed with the express purpose of expanding its ranks as wide as possible in a bid to safeguard the entire universe from any and all threats that would harm it.
