The following contains major spoilers for Ultimates #6, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Ultimate Universe’s Immortal Weapons have finally arrived, and there is nothing the Ultimates can do to stop them.

Ultimates #6 finds the eponymous team of heroes embarking on a rescue mission to save the numerous superpowered prisoners being held in one of the Maker’s many black sites. Unfortunately, what they find waiting for them isn’t any sort of mass torture chamber, but rather an open-air arena nestled deep in the mythical city of K’un-Lun, one inhabited by the Hulk and his fellow Immortal Weapons. To make matters worse, the Hulk makes it clear from the very start that the Ultimates are fighting a losing battle and there is simply no hope of them all making it out alive.

Introduced alongside Danny Rand, aka the Iron Fist, in the pages of 1974’s Marvel Premiere #15 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, the city of K’un-Lun is one of the fabled Seven Capital Cities of Heaven, each of which is located outside the known universe within a pocket dimension that can only be accessed from Earth once every decade. Historically, the Iron Fist has been the guardian of K’un-Lun, serving to protect it from any and all threats, usually in the form of outsiders who would venture through its mystical gates in search of treasure and power to be plundered.

While the Iron Fist serves as the guardian of K’un-Lun, each of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven has its own champion, collectively known as the Immortal Weapons. The Immortal Weapons as a whole have existed for thousands of years, yet they wouldn’t make their first appearance as a group until 2007’s Immortal Iron Fist #8 by writers Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction and artist David Aja. When first confronted by the Immortal Weapons, the Iron Fist ended up killing the Crane Champion, setting off a series of events that would draw him closer to the rest of the group than ever before.

Marvel has finally answered a decades-old question about which of two iconic mutants would survive a fight with the other half of the Fastball Special

Though the Bruce Banner of the new Ultimate Universe is still very much the Hulk, he is far from the version of the character that fans are used to. As a member of the Maker’s Shadow Cabinet, this Hulk helps to lord over the general populace as one of the select few who stands as purportedly independent world leaders. In truth, none of the nations of this world need ever be at war, yet such conflicts continue to play out with regular frequency in order to provide the illusion of peace that the Maker’s seemingly deft hand provides.
