The following contains major spoilers for Wolverine #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Wolverine is going back into battle against the successor to one of his very first comic book enemies.
Wolverine #2 finds the titular mutant antihero still reeling from his recent battle against Cyber, which has since drawn the attention of gun-toting agents from Department H. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Wolverine isn’t the only superhuman brawler lurking in the snowy forest, and it isn’t long before the latest in a long line of Wendigos makes his presence known. Even worse, however, is the fact that this Wendigo, like so many others, was transformed into a hulking monstrosity thanks to nothing but utter tragedy and his own innate instinct for survival.

Marvel Comics’ original Wendigo, Paul Cartier, first appeared all the way back in 1973’s Incredible Hulk #162 by Steve Englehart and Herb Trimpe. Cartier acquired the curse of the Wendigo after a hunting trip gone wrong during which his group was trapped in the wilderness for an extended period of time, forcing him to consume the flesh of a fellow hunter who lost his life to a wolf attack. This sealed Cartier’s fate, at least until his friend Georges Baptiste completed a ritual which transferred the one to the other. Leading up to that point, Paul came into conflict with the Hulk, who had decided to help his sister Marie find out what happened to him.
It was during one of Cartier’s encounters with the Hulk when Wolverine made his own Marvel Comics debut, albeit in the form of a brief cameo, in the pages of 1974’s Incredible Hulk #180 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe. Only a single issue later, Wolverine would made his first full fledged appearance, ultimately inserting himself into the battle between the Hulk and the Wendigo. While Wolverine was clearly gunning for the Hulk from the outset, he also took aim at the Wendigo throughout the battle. In the years since, numerous characters have suffered the curse of the Wendigo, including at least one version of Wolverine himself.

Wolverine has found himself in Canada’s Northwest Territories following the end of the once brilliant Krakoan Era. After the fall of Krakoa, Wolverine took to the wilderness in the hopes of escaping from his usual concerns and whatever other trouble might come his way. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of villains who have made it their mission to track Wolverine down, including Silas Burr, aka Cyber. Imbued with Adamantium skin, Cyber has long been a thorn in Wolverine’s side, which will soon prove to be more true than ever before thanks to the villain’s recent encounter with a seemingly sentient form of Adamantium that has chosen him as its latest host.

Wolverine
Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.
Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
