Star Wars Fans Explore One of the Franchise’s Biggest Events in New Series

Marvel Comics is bringing readers into the middle of one of Star Wars‘ most important battles for the very first time.

“Rising” from the pages of Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1 picks up shortly after the destruction of the Galactic Empire’s second Death Star. As his ship flies past the wreckage of the Battle of Endor, a lone Imperial General opens communications to leave his people with an all too important message. As it turns out, he has no intentions of confirming the harsh truth that the Empire has all but fallen entirely, especially not when he can spread the kind of lies that will embolden those who remain to continue fighting back against the Rebel Alliance that brought it all crumbling down on top of them.

The Battle of Jakku was the final stand of the remnants of the Galactic Empire. Though this battle has yet to play out on screen, its aftermath and legacy were an indelible part of the story of 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, much of which took place on Jakku itself. In the Star Wars mythos as a whole, the Battle of Jakku stands as a turning point for both the New Republic, who were able to cement their place in the galaxy following a decisive win, as well as for the remnants of the Empire that would go on to become the First Order.

Writer Alex Segura previously touched on his excitement for telling such a pivotal Star Wars story, explaining, “It’s an unbelievable honor to tell this lost story of Star Wars history, alongside so many amazing artists, in the pages of the three Battle of Jakku limited series. Our story will be epic in scope – involving all the major characters you love, plus some new, exciting additions to the mythos.” Segura continued, “We’ll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War – we’ll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing. The goal for all of us is to turn up the volume and make sure this adventure stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the other stories of the era. As the Empire collapses, a new darkness arises.”
