The following contains major spoilers for Venom War: Zombiotes #2, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
One of the most important villains in Spider-Man’s entire rogues gallery is finally back in action, and he is horrifying.
After fighting their way through a swarm of undying cannibals in the pages of Venom War: Zombiotes #2, She-Hulk, Overdrive, and the Shocker have managed to find a seemingly safe hideaway within the Bar With No Name. At least, that is the case until the Zombiote ooze makes its way inside, setting off a fight no one involved was prepared for. Even worse, the situation has given rise to a heartbreaking reunion between the Shocker and his long-lost friend and teammate, Boomerang, who has become just the latest flesh-eating monstrosity to call New York City their home.

Introduced in Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Bill Everett’s story “The Stage is Set!” from the pages of 1966’s Tales to Astonish #81, Frederick Myers moved from Australia to the United States at a young age. There, he discovered his miraculous pitching ability, leading to what would have been a stellar career in Major League Baseball if not for a bribery scandal with Fred at its center. In the years that followed, Fred turned to crime, putting his incredible arm to use as the villainous Boomerang.
Although Boomerang’s career was largley defined by his villainous endeavors, he was never nearly as cruel as many of Marvel’s other costumed criminals. While Boomerang certainly carried out his fair share of mortifying crimes, he didn’t exhibit the same sort of mean streak as villains like the Kingpin or Bullseye, which helped him eventually form a fast friendship with none other than Spider-Man. Tragically, Boomerang sacrificed his own life to save Spider-Man during 2021’s Sinister War.

Marvel’s Venom War began after the fight between Eddie and Dylan Brock, each of whom is sure that saving the universe will come at the expense of the other. Unsurprisingly, there are a plethora of other figures who have come to view the chaos as their perfect opportunity to make a move, including the villainous future Eddie known as Meridius. After worming his way into Alchemax, Meridius unleashed the Zombiote strain that quickly overrun nearly the entire city.
