G.I. Joe and the Transformers’ Worlds Clash in Explosive First Look

Skybound and Image Comics have revealed an exciting first look at the variant cover lineup and an interior page preview of Void Rivals #13. The upcoming issue, which sees the worlds of G.I. Joe and the Void Rivals collide, will begin the third story arc of Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed Energon Universe series.

Skybound’s preview reveals Cobra-La’s Pythona, plagued by fears of failure, on a mission in deep space. Her crew has tracked the Energonic signature they picked up on Earth to a location that could spell disaster for the planetoid’s famous inhabitants. “The worlds of G.I. JOE and VOID RIVALS collide as Pythona of Cobra-La ventures deep into space. Will her mission spell certain doom for the Void Rivals?” the publisher’s description reads.

In addition to Void Rivals #13 artist Lorenzo De Felici’s main cover, the issue will feature an impressive variant cover lineup, including an open-to-order cover by Mattia De Iulis (The Cull) and a 1:10 incentive variant beginning a connecting cover series by Leonardo Romero (Mighty Marvel Masterworks). The rest are a 1:25 incentive variant by Gerardo Zaffino (Avengers) and Rex Lokus (I Am Batman), a 1:50 incentive variant by concept artist Kendrick “Kunkka” Lim, a 1:100 incentive variant by Ludo Lullabi (Harley Quinn), and a blank sketch cover.

The Transformers and G.I Joe shared Energon Universe officially began in the summer of 2023 with the surprise first appearance of the iconic Transformers character Jetfire inVoid Rivalsby Kirkman, De Felici, and Mateus Lopes (Step by Bloody Step). Each issue of Void Rivals “takes readers further into the Energon Universe, with more familiar faces to appear, including some of the most popular Transformers bots, allies, and enemies!”

Other Energon Universe titles include Transformers by Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Do a Powerbomb), artist Jorge Corona (Middlewest), and colorist Mike Spicer (Stillwater, Murder Falcon) and the upcoming, eagerly anticipated G.I. Joe by Joshua Williamson (Superman, Dark Ride). Williamson previously helmed the G.I. Joe Duke and Cobra Commander limited series.

Kelly Thompson’s Scarlett (Black Widow, Birds of Prey), with art by Marco Ferrari (Frontiersman) along with Destro by Dan Watters(Loki, Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!) and Andrei Bressan (Dark Ride, Birthright) are also part of the Energon universe.

Void Rivals #13 will arrive in comic book shops on October 23, 2024.
