The following contains major spoilers for X-Men #4, on sale September 18 from Marvel Comics.
The X-Men are headed for a rematch with one of the Multiverse’s most dangerous mutants.
After facing off against Trevor Fitzroy and his murderous Upstarts, the eponymous heroes of X-Men #4 are left wondering if they will ever truly beat their longtime foe at the deadly game he is playing. And, as much as Fitzroy would like to think that his mission was a success, the true mastermind of their plot is far from pleased. The only thing the Sugar Man would ever consider a success is getting his hands on one of the new generation of mutants that have begun cropping up, and his plans for them are anything but benevolent.

Introduced in the pages of 1995’s Generation Next #2 by Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachalo, the Sugar Man is a native of the reality of Earth-295, better known as the Age of Apocalypse. There, the Sugar Man oversaw human internment camps all across the Pacific Northwest, where he frequently tortured and experimented on unwitting human prisoners. Though the villain was seemingly killed by Chamber and Colossus at multiple turns, his shape-shifting, near-indestructible nature ensured that he survived to continue terrorizing mutant heroes throughout the Multiverse.
Eventually, Sugar Man was displaced to the primary Marvel Universe, also known as the reality of Earth-616, where he quickly teamed up with the similarly villainous Genegineer. Operating out of Genosha, the Sugar man came into conflict with numerous heroes such as those of Excalibur, yet he continued to evade any real consequences for his crimes. Soon enough, Sugar Man had developed close albeit short-lived working relationships with everyone from Mister Sinister to the twisted Dark Beast, all before coming to what seemed like his ultimate end at the hands of Nate Grey in 2018’s oversized Uncanny X-Men #1.
Daredevil: “Murder is Art” in Bloody New Marvel Series
Marvel is about to give the Woman Without Fear the Red Band treatment in an all-new series — Daredevil: Unleash Hell.
Following the end of the Krakoan Era, a new team of X-Men has risen to continue fighting for and protecting mutants all over the world. To that end, Cyclops and his team have set up shop in a relatively remote corner of Alaska where they can operate without too many worries about how the locals will react. These X-Men have also gone out of their way to cover up the truth behind certain newly empowered mutants who could easily cause a major incident through little to no fault of their own.
X-Men #4 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
