Skybound and Image Comics have revealed a first-look preview and the variant cover lineup for Destro #5. The upcoming final issue of Destro, which arrives in October, will pave the way for the eagerly anticipated November debut of G.I. Joe #1.
Skybound’s preview reveals the return of Destro as his adversaries, Cobra Commander and The Crimson Twins, assume control of his M.A.R.S corporation and tech. “Sorry to disappoint, but Daddy’s home,” he utters to the surprise of Xamot and Tomax. Skybound’s Destro #5 description reads, “Destro. Cobra Commander. The Crimson Twins. The most dangerous powers in the Energon Universe are at war, but only one can win. The road to G.I. Joe #1 ends here!” Dan Watters (Loki, Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!) pennedthe final chapter of the limited series with art by Andrei Bressan (Dark Ride, Birthright) and color by Adriano Lucas (Dark Ride, Nightwing).

In addition to Bressan and Lucas’ main cover, Destro #5’s variant covers lineup includes an open-to-order cover by Sanford Greene (Bitter Root) and the final cover in the 1:10 incentive connecting cover series by Nikola Čižmešija (Batman and Robin). A 1:25 incentive variant by Marco Ferrari (Scarlett) and a 1:50 incentive variant by Taurin Clarke (Captain America) will also grace the upcoming Destro issue.
Destro debuted as one of four G.I. Joe miniseries that introduced the iconic characters of the G.I. Joe and Cobra teams to the Energon Universe. Alongside Joshua Williamson’s Duke, Cobra Commander, and Kelly Thompson’s Scarlett, Destro sets the stage for the upcoming G.I. Joe #1.

G.I. Joe #1 Will be Commemorated With a Special Screening
Skybound and Hasbro will mark the landmark release of the upcoming G.I. Joe #1 with a special screening of 1987’s G.I. Joe: The Movie. The Los Angeles screening, which arrives the same day the comic debuts in November, will be preceded by a signing with the upcoming book’s scribe Williamson. The signing will happen on November 13, between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., at the comic shop Things from Another World, Universal CityWalk Hollywood. The signing is open to the public and will feature a store-exclusive G.I. Joe #1 variant cover release available for purchase.
Exclusive to Skybound Insiders is the 7p.m. screening of G.I. Joe: The Movie at Universal Cinema AMC, Universal CityWalk Hollywood. Tickets will be allocated to existing and new Insider members who sign up between September 10 and October 20. Screening attendees get exclusive surprises and the opportunity to win additional prizes provided by Skybound and Hasbro. A Q&A with Williamson to discuss G.I. Joe #1 will follow the private AMC CityWalk screening of the classic 1987 film.
Paving the way for G.I. Joe‘s first issue, Destro #5 will arrive in comic book shops on October 16, 2024.
