CBR has an exclusive preview of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola’s upcoming art book. Titled Hell, Ink & Water: The Art of Mike Mignola, the book will be released this October.
Mignola’s artwork will also be celebrated at his first ever gallery show at New York’s renowned Philippe Labaune Gallery, opening today (Sept. 19). The exhibit features watercolor paintings, over 100 black and white pieces, and original art from Hellboy, Mignola’s recent illustrated edition of Pinocchio, and other pieces that are included in IDW’s upcoming art book. The Philippe Labaune Gallery will also host a special book release party for Hell, Ink & Water: The Art of Mike Mignola during New York Comic Con. CBR has an exclusive preview of the art book, featuring Mignola’s take on Marvel comic book artist Jack Kirby‘s Mangog character as well as other beautiful art. The art exhibit will be open to the public until Oct. 26, and IDW’s art book will go on sale Oct. 15.

IDW’s press release for the art exhibit says that the art book will feature 31 new watercolor pieces, with a focus on themes “near and dear to Mignola”, including skulls, monsters and all things supernatural. In January 2025, Dark Horse Comics will publish Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, a folklore-inspired anthology of fantasy stories written and illustrated by Mignola. The book is the first publication from Mignola’s new Curious Objects imprint at Dark Horse, which will set the stage for more stories in the “Lands Unknown” universe.
Mignola’s Art Book Shows His Passions Beyond Hellboy
Mignola, who is best known for creating Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics, says that the art gallery and book show his life and creations beyond one of his most famous works and will give viewers a glimpse of a different side of him. “It does seem like suddenly there is a whole lot going on,” Mignola said in IDW’s press release.

“Most of these things have been in the works for ages but nice to have them out in the world at last — especially as all this stuff (the paintings, Pinocchio and Bowling With Corpses) is about life beyond Hellboy,” Mignola continued, “I still love Hellboy (of course) and have my hand in several new Hellboy related projects, but I’m excited to see a very new and different side of myself out there.”
The Hell, Ink & Water: The Art of Mike Mignola exhibit is open to the public until Oct. 26, and IDW’s book goes on sale Oct. 15.
