Marvel Comics’ Man Without Fear is returning to his roots as a vigilante, and it means giving up the life he only just made for himself.
Following a brutal albeit tragic encounter with Wilson Fisk, the titular hero of Daredevil #13 finds himself questioning everything he has done in the past year. Not in terms of heroics, but in terms of his other, more personal endeavors. Unfortunately, Matt simply cannot see a way forward wherein he can keep walking the line between his two missions. As such, one of them has to be left behind, and it is his role within the church that Daredevil ultimately decides to set aflame.

While Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, has always been a devout Catholic, his faith has taken on new prominence in recent years. During Matt’s time spent leading The Fist, the heroic cult that ran opposed to The Hand, he ended up leaning into his faith when forced to literally go to Hell and back to save his closest loved ones along with the rest of the world. This experience galvanized Matt’s beliefs, all while pointing him in a new direction upon his eventual return from the infernal depths.
In 2023’s Daredevil #1 by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, the titular hero had little to no memory of his prior experiences, leaving him to embark upon life as a priest. He took up a residency at St. Nick’s where he could help the disenfranchised youths who were in the church’s care. Initially, this new life was entirely devoid of Matt’s Daredevil persona, which quickly came rushing back when his memories of who he was at his core. Although Matt was successful in keeping things together as both a priest and Daredevil, it wasn’t long before the two sides of his persona began conflicting with one another in ways that could not be ignored.

Even though Matt has decided he cannot both be Daredevil and a priest, his faith continues to play a major role in his superheroic endeavors. Over the past year, Daredevil has been hounded by his own sins manifested as demons that have possessed some of his most beloved friends, closest allies, and worst enemies alike. Possibly the most dangerous of these so far was a possessed Wolverine, who had been taken over by the demonic personification of Matt’s Lust, driving him to carry out brutal acts of wanton violence against anyone who crossed his path.
